Location Scouting
Across Scotland.

From Edinburgh's cobblestone closes to the raw coastal cliffs of the Isle of Skye. Every location scouted, recce'd, and permitted before your crew arrives.

Scotland has some of the most diverse and cinematic terrain in Europe, and most of it is within a day's drive of Edinburgh. The challenge isn't finding a beautiful location. The challenge is finding the right one for your brief, confirming access, and making sure your crew can actually get there on the day.

That's what I do. I've scouted locations for TVCs, music videos, fashion campaigns, documentaries and feature films across every corner of Scotland. From Edinburgh's cobblestone closes to the raw coastal cliffs of the Isle of Skye, the ancient castles of the Highlands to quiet fishing villages on the Borders coast.

Every location scout comes with detailed reports, access notes, risk assessments, parking and logistics plans, and full permissions secured before your crew arrives.

Local Knowledge Matters

Scotland's best locations often require permissions from multiple bodies, landowners who don't answer emails quickly, and access roads that look great on Google Maps but don't work for a crew van in November. Knowing which locations are genuinely shootable versus which ones just look good on Pinterest is half the job. I've been doing this for over a decade. I'll save you the headaches.

FAQ

Common Questions

How far in advance should I contact you for location scouting?+

As early as possible. For a straightforward commercial or editorial shoot, two to three weeks is workable. For anything involving NatureScot, HES, or private estate permissions, allow four to six weeks minimum. The earlier you get in touch, the more options I can give you.

Can you scout locations remotely before I arrive?+

Yes, and this is how most jobs start. You send me a brief or reference images, I scout and photograph a shortlist, and send you a detailed scout report with high-resolution photos, GPS coordinates, access notes, and logistics information. Most clients make their final location choices from these reports before they even land in Scotland.

Do you only scout in Edinburgh?+

No. I scout across all of Scotland, from the Borders coast to the Outer Hebrides. Edinburgh is my base, but I'm on the road scouting Highland, Skye, and Borders locations regularly. Anywhere in Scotland is within reach.

What if the weather changes on shoot day?+

Every scout I do includes backup locations. Scotland's weather is changeable, that's just the reality. I always identify alternatives that give you a similar look but might be sheltered, lower elevation, or in a different weather pocket. On the day, I'll make a call with you first thing in the morning based on conditions.

How much does location scouting cost?+

It depends on the scope. A single-day Edinburgh scout is different from a week-long Highland recce covering ten locations. I'll give you a clear quote based on your brief. No hidden fees, no surprises.
