In Plain Terms

What "production services" means in Scotland

Production services is what a visiting production hires when it has the creative and the client but not the country. You bring the director, the DOP, the producer and the brief. A Scottish production services company supplies everything else: the locations and the permissions to shoot them, the crew and the kit, the transport, accommodation and catering, the local contracts and payroll, and a producer on the ground who is accountable for the day.

Scottish Fixer is that company for Scotland. We are hired by production companies, agencies and brands from the US, Europe and Asia. We do not own creative, develop projects or finance. We deliver other people's productions in Scotland, through a working network of local Edinburgh, Glasgow and Highland teams, and we have done so for eight years.

Some clients want the whole shoot produced. Some bring a full crew and want local fixing only. The brief form asks which, so the first reply is a proper answer rather than a question.

Who We Work With

Production services for foreign crews

Most of our clients are producing from somewhere else: an agency in New York with a whisky brand, a production company in Hamburg with an automotive TVC, a fashion title in Milan, a broadcaster in Tokyo. They need Scotland delivered to their standard, in their schedule, without learning UK employment practice, Scottish council permitting or Highland weather the hard way.

That is the job. One Scottish producer takes the brief, quotes plain numbers, builds the local team, gets the permits signed off, and stands on the location at call time. For international productions we hold the UK crew contracts and run payroll, so your line producer never has to. Read the complete guide to filming in Scotland for permits, seasons, crew, locations and incentives in one place, or see recent work for who we have done this for.

Coverage

Scotland, delivered from Edinburgh

Day-to-day bases are Edinburgh, Glasgow, the Highlands and Skye, with regular work in the Cairngorms, Loch Lomond, Argyll, the Outer Hebrides, Orkney, the Borders and Fife. On cross-border productions we cover the North of England and Northern Ireland with local partners. Scottish Fixer is the Scotland arm of HiJack Production Services; productions shooting in more than one territory get one principal contact throughout.

FAQ

Common Questions

What are production services?+

Production services is the industry term for a local company that delivers a shoot on behalf of a production company, agency or brand from another country or city. The client owns the creative and the client relationship; the service company supplies everything on the ground: locations, permits, crew, equipment, transport, accommodation, local contracts and on-set production management. Scottish Fixer is the production services partner for Scotland.

What is the difference between production services and a fixer?+

Scope. A fixer is usually one person coordinating local logistics for a crew that brings its own production team. Production services is the full delivery: budgeting, scheduling, crewing, permitting, kit, logistics and on-set management, run by a local producer. We do both; the brief form asks which you need.

Do you work with foreign crews bringing their own director and DOP?+

Yes, that is the majority of the work. You bring the key creatives and the client; we supply every local element and one accountable Scottish producer. For international productions we also handle UK crew contracts, BECTU rates and payroll so nobody has to navigate UK employment practice from abroad.

How are Scottish production services priced?+

Day rate plus expenses for small shoots and stills jobs. A production services fee, or a percentage of below-the-line, for TVCs and larger productions. We quote plain numbers against the brief rather than ranges.

Which parts of Scotland do you cover?+

All of it. Day-to-day bases are Edinburgh, Glasgow, the Highlands and Skye, with regular work in the Cairngorms, Loch Lomond, Argyll, the Outer Hebrides, Orkney, the Borders and Fife, and cross-border work into the North of England and Northern Ireland.

Can you help with UK tax credits?+

We provide production-structured guidance on the Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit (AVEC) and the Independent Film Tax Credit (IFTC) for qualifying film and high-end TV, and can introduce a UK-resident production company where a claim needs one. TVCs and short-form branded content do not qualify. This is structuring guidance, not tax advice.
